Sauer 38h Pistol Serial Numbers
Sig P220 Serial Number Lookup
Hey guys. I haven't posted in this forum before, but I have been requested to research and value 3 pistols that were WWII bring backs by this mans father. I haven't had a chance to hear a full story on their background except that his father got the pistols to be able to be armed when going out to bars (while in country), and I'm assuming most of that time was spent in France because the other pistols are French and Belgian pocket pistols. I will make separate posts for them.
Here is what I think I have learned about the JP Sauer and Sohn 38H:
Appears to be a later war variant assigned/accepted into the army. It is the no safety version. It has one magazine in it that has the caliber and 'S/S' factory marking, so I'm assuming it's original to the gun. The bluing is darn close to 100% with a few storage scratches being the only things keeping it from what I would call 99% bluing. It is rough machined, which I'm guessing is a trait of all late war pistols.. crank them out of the factory as fast as possible.
This thing feels brand new when racking the slide. I haven't torn it down yet, but I did take the slide off and can confirm the slide number matches the serial on the frame. All of the pistols have a bunch of grease packed in them which is drying out a little. I can't say when it was done as I don't have the full timeline on them yet. As far as I know, he does not have any papers for the pistols. I don't see any scratch marks on the grip screws, so I am assuming they are original. Is there a way to tell?
As for my photos, the light plays a lot of tricks on me. In some photos it looks like the bluing is worn, but it's just a reflection. Also, the finish on the grips toward the top changes a little.. almost like machining marks, I think this showed up in the photo. You can see the splotchiness on some of the metal. This is grease.
In addition to my questions above, can someone help me date the pistol? And finally, value. What is an average SELL price for one of these in this condition?
I appreciate everyone's time in answering.
Thank you
